Spring’s Gift Soy-Free Vegenaise
This is why you have to love spring.
With spring comes rainbows and with rainbows, pots of gold. And my rainbow brought me a pot of milky, creamy white gold. To my surprise I opened up my Vegetarian Times and there was an ad from Follow Your Heart introducing their new (drum roll…) Soy Free Vegenaise! Yes!!!! Soy Free. Immediately I knew that I had to get a jar.
Let me give you the background story… Recently, I made the decision that I had to limit my soy intake. Too much of anything is not good and soy is in A LOT of things. I was down to the last drops of my Reduced Fat Vegenaise when I decided to try out this soy free mayonnaise recipe from Vegan Feast Kitchen. I wanted to make sure that I had a little bit of the Vegenaise to compare tastes.
Unfortunately the recipe did not go well. :( Not sure what happened. Others were able to make it with success so I knew that I would try to do it again one day but I resolved that I would get me another jar of Vegenaise until I mastered the recipe. Literally one day before I was to go to the grocery store I opened my magazine and there she wrote!
Actually that was not the end of the story…
The Vegenaise was in the magazine but it was not listed on the Follow Your Heart website. So I called my local co-op and sad to say they did not carry it. After visiting a Whole Foods store and calling two more I was a little desperate (that is a significant understatement). I emailed Follow Your Heart to see if the Soy Free Vegenaise was available in stores. The rep emailed me back within an hour and said that it is already being distributed on the west coast but not on the east (sorry east coasters but it is coming!). I asked if she could tell me who would have it and while waiting for a response I called one more store and voila! They had it! So first thing Saturday morning I headed out and bought my first jar of Soy Free Vegenaise!
It took about 2 days before I opened it (oddly enough) and when I did there seemed to be some missing. I yelled out to my roomie to check to see if they had opened it and the response was epic! My roomie excitedly proclaimed how delicious Vegenaise tasted and that Follow Your Heart essentially put Best Foods in the jar and sneakily labeled it vegan! Naturally, I decided to taste a bit on a spoon and it was heaven.
Follow Your Heart Soy Free Vegenaise is vegen (oops I mean vegan :)) AND gluten free.
Ingredients: expeller-pressed hi-oleic safflower oil, filtered water, brown rice syrup, apple cider vinegar, pea protein, sea salt, mustard flour, and lemon juice concentrate.
Texture: Creamy and smooth! Everything to boast about to your non-vegan friends.
Taste: Yummy! I can’t really remember the taste of Best Foods but we will trust my roomie and say that it tastes like a yummy healthy replacement to Best Foods.
Packaging: Fresh and new. I love what Follow Your Heart did with the packaging. It gives Vegenaise a fresh and vibrant look.
How I use my Soy Free Vegenaise:
- Dollop on my salads mixed with one of the following: Parm, dill, dried jalapeno, ketchup (to make thousand island) or nothing at all!
- Potato salad or low-carb potato (cauliflower) salad.
- Raisin carrot salad. Memories of elementary school.
- Any recipe where you would normally use mayo (of course!).
Now go run out and get yourself a jar!
